Fight Gum Disease with Preventive Dentistry
What Is Gum Disease?
Your first weapon against gum disease is good oral hygiene. Gum or periodontal disease occurs when plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – produce toxins that attack the gum line and tissues. If the plaque is not removed, it may trigger the development of the early stage of gum disease, also known as gingivitis. Its symptoms include red and swollen gums that easily bleed. Fortunately, gingivitis is still reversible. In contrast, periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease where one’s gums and bone structure may deteriorate and lead to tooth loss.
Why Fighting Gum Disease Is Important
About 80% of Canadian adults have chronic gum infections, but may not be aware as it is not a painful condition. There is mounting evidence that germs from the mouth can get into the blood stream and migrate to the heart and blood vessels. We ensure our patients understand the importance of having a healthy mouth, because we pay attention to preventive dental care to fight gum disease.
How to Prevent Gum Disease
To prevent gum disease, you have to uproot its cause—plaque. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. The gentle mechanical action of the brush and floss in disrupting the film of plaque are far more important than what is applied to the brush! Oral disinfectants are an excellent adjunct.
Even with good home care, plaque and tartar can still build up below the gumline and in hard-to-reach areas. So, professional dental cleanings are advised at regular intervals.
